چکیده

We propose a simple scheme to solve the tilt indetermination problem in adaptive optics compensation with laser guide stars. This technique, providing tomographic turbulence analysis works, increases the area into which a tip-tilt guide star has to be found by approximately two orders of magnitude, boosting the sky coverage close to 100% at visible wavelengths. In addition, the proposed scheme provides a tilt measurement free of anisoplanatism error. It has numerous engineering advantages compared to other tilt retrieval techniques, as it does not require special auxiliary equipment nor an increased laser power.

Split atmospheric tomography using laser and natural guide stars.

Laser guide star (LGS) atmospheric tomography is described in the literature as integrated minimum-variance tomographic wavefront reconstruction from a concatenated wavefront-sensor measurement vector consisting of many high-order, tip/tilt (TT)-removed LGS measurements, supplemented by a few low-order natural guide star (NGS) components essential to estimating the TT and tilt anisoplanatism (T...

Experience with the cmrent gelleration of astronomical single laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) systellls has demoIlstrated systelll perforlIlance that is often lilllited by residual tip-tilt errors illduced by the paucity of bright tip-tilt natural guide stars (NCS). To overcollle this lilllitation, we are developillg a nt'w gelleration of tip-tilt sensors that will operate at near-i...

Methods for correcting tilt anisoplanatism in laser-guide-star-based multiconjugate adaptive optics.

Multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) is a technique for correcting turbulence-induced phase distortions in three dimensions instead of two, thereby greatly expanding the corrected field of view of an adaptive optics system. This is accomplished with use of multiple deformable mirrors conjugate to distinct ranges in the atmosphere, with actuator commands computed from wave-front sensor (WFS) me...

Modeling low order aberrations in laser guide star adaptive optics systems.

When using a laser guide star (LGS) adaptive optics (AO) system, quasi-static aberrations are observed between the measured wavefronts from the LGS wavefront sensor (WFS) and the natural guide star (NGS) WFS. These LGS aberrations, which can be as much as 1200 nm RMS on the Keck II LGS AO system, arise due to the finite height and structure of the sodium layer. The LGS aberrations vary signific...

A Computationally EÆcient Wavefront Reconstructor for Simulations of Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics on Giant Telescopes

Multi-conjugate adaptive optical (MCAO) systems with from 10 to 10 degrees of freedom have been proposed for future giant telescopes. Using standard matrix methods to compute, optimize, and implement wavefront reconstruction algorithms for these systems is impractical, since the number of calculations required to compute (apply) the reconstruction matrix scales as the cube (square) of the numbe...
